Overview
Chico Mendes, a Brazilian rubber tapper, trade union leader, and environmentalist, became the leading figure in fighting to preserve the Amazon rainforest. Unable to receive a formal education, Chico taught himself to read at the age of 20, and, with his newfound skill, listened to foreign radio stations, which broadcasted the injustices his fellow rubber tappers endured. When the rubber tappers began to organize, Chico joined the cause and started fighting for rural rights. He advocated against deforestation, going as far as to peacefully surround forest areas by blocking bulldozers and standing up against chainsaws. He felt no fear other than knowing the rainforest was in danger and it was up to him to defend it with his life.
