Overview
The first significant publication on an artist whose work extends from performance in the late 1970s to today's acclaimed robotic projects. It is precisely this grounding in performance that distinguishes Dean's interactive installations because, even though his work employs complex technology, his motivation is a desire to communicate in a direct and meaningful way. This publication marks two the inaugural presentation of BE ME, an interactive video installation in which Dean has adapted and extended leading-edge animation software, and an international symposium entitled Interactivity in New Media Art, organized in conjunction with this exhibition and held at the National Gallery of Canada. Max Dean has exhibited nationally and internationally, notably at Kunsthalle Düsseldorf and ZKM Center for Art and Media, both in Germany, as well as at the Venice Biennale.
